Friday 23rd July - Sydney to Melbourne

We finally met one of the other people in our room, who turned out to be a very friendly Indian girl living in America. We chatted for a bit before we checked out, which was nice. After breakfast we took the train to the airport as the station was just over the road. They're cool, multi-layer trains and it was surprisingly empty. The journey didn't take long. My huge bag has gained several pounds over the last few months, so I had great difficulty carrying it, but I objected to paying the high trolley fees, so we slid the bags through the airport. Which was horribly dirty, especially as we've watched South American airports and bus stations being swept almost constantly while we were there. I was very impressed though, when I realised that Mikey hadn't checked the time of the plane and we found that we were checking in only 20 minutes before we were due to fly!

We had a nice new plane for the hour-long flight, and they even gave us lunch. I tried to watch some news and ended up with an episode of Friends, and then we landed in Melbourne. We were told to destroy all prohibited foodstuffs before we left the airport, and we'd just bought food for a few days, so I was unimpressed. Fortunately we were told that Melbourne had no sniffer dogs, so we shouldn't worry!

The shuttle bus took us right to the hostel after an hour of driving round the city, and we didn't do much for the rest of the day. There are too many people in their fifties in youth hostels around here. It's just wrong. We went for a walk (in the rain), had supper and watched American Pie 2 before bed.
