We were woken up at 5am this morning by a loudspeaker on a hill about a mile away blaring out something very loud in Arabic. I'm guessing it was the call to prayer, but I just went back to sleep again. Mikey said that after they'd done praying they then sang about praying, but I just slept.
We had breakfast, enjoyed the view of mist on forested hills and ferns, the loud Arabic again and the crickets, and then checked out of the hotel. The hotel man dropped us off in town by a waterfall and we walked along a jungle path, following the sound of water until we found it. A pretty little waterfall with a pretty little bridge over it, and a thick brown river full of polystyrene blocks and rubbish. We walked into town and found a party going on - Malaysia's 47th birthday today - and had a look in a couple of local shops along the way. Then we found a small dog to play with at the bus station and waited about an hour for the bus. Anticipating the rush (which didn't happen) we managed to grab the front seats with more leg room, and then were told by the ticket collector that we should stick to the seats assigned to us. We took that as friendly advice for future reference and stayed where we were.
The ride back to KL was much the same as the trip here, but in reverse. The bus had a bit more life to it, the horn was used as mirrors, indicators and the ability to see round corners, and once we reached the capital we realised every Malaysian and their car had come to town this afternoon. Six lanes of traffic, made more by the mopeds, some of which had whole families on them, belched out black smoke but it was all quite orderly and the vehicles moved reasonably quickly. We walked back to the hostel, hit immediately by the humidity again, and I had a quick shower. Then we went out to the Petronas towers for a well-deserved crispy aromatic duck with pancakes (all made for us on a little tray table) and doughnut supper. We wandered outside as it got dark to take some photos of the towers all lit up.
It was quite a spectacle, with the fountains lit up too.
Back at the hostel, we wrote diaries and I have to go and pack my bag for the morning: we're off to the jungle.
