We worked out why the prison guard, I mean hostel caretaker, was so grumpy last night (he was like Hogwarts's Filch, without the charm), and why the news was on the radio at a weird time and while the programme we wanted to watch on television was half an hour late. The state of South Australia is in its own time zone, half an hour behind the east! Half an hour! That's just stupid.
Filch said he'd be gone by 6am and that we were the only guests. I thought the empty prison was a bit spooky, and it was certainly freezing cold. In the morning we had the whole place to ourselves so we went for a little wander and then drove and drove all day.
We couldn't be bothered to adjust our watches for the 30-minute change because we'd only have two and a half days of it before we'd go forward again, so we've been taking half an hour off the time in our heads. Which meant I had to wait extra long for lunch.
There were only two things we saw of any interest (except for the hundreds of kangaroo bodies by the side of the road) and one was a giant plastic crayfish advertising a restaurant. The other was a pink lake which was more sort of purple, but very pretty. It had bacteria in it.
We got to Adelaide at about 4.30 and found the hostel. We chose it because they do free apple pie. Then we drove round the city, into the pretty, leafy North part, saw the Oval cricket ground and then went to a supermarket. When we got back to the hostel we found we'd forgotten our main ingredient, so we walked back in the dark. Then we cooked, after waiting for a hotplate to be free, and missed the apple pie. We'll have to try again tomorrow.
