It was raining so hard this morning it woke me up. Fortunately, all our clocks are still on east coast time, so it was actually earlier than I thought and I could go back to sleep.
We took the car back to Hertz, all very quick and easy. Bit worried that they didn't refund my deposit, but apparently that's done automatically. We went back and made lunch, then took some sandwiches into town. Our first stop was at an opal mining museum and expensive jewellery shop. They have a small fake opal mine in their basement which was fun, and a huge selection of beautiful, incredibly expensive Aboriginal art and didgeridoos. We managed to escape without buying anything even though the lady was watching over us carefully. I did want to look at the gorgeous opals for a bit longer, but we saw our chance to leave and took it!
Next on the list was the museum. It has an opalised plessiosaur, and there's probably not many of them in the world, so you sort of have to go and have a look, don't you? It's the law. The museum was nice, lots of pretty things on display. The huge plesiosaur was cool - during fosilisation its bones had been replaced by silica and other minerals to produce a skeleton made of opal. I think the best bit was the massive collection of rocks and crystals. Even Mikey was a bit impressed. He'll be as excited about rocks as me one day.
We had our picnic lunch and then went out to the Adelaide Oval cricket ground, which is supposed to be one of the prettiest in the world. The river was lovely, there were some great black swans looking menacing and the whole pathway was lined with bright green spring-like trees. The cricket ground was open, or at least, we managed to walk in without being stopped, so we had a quick look. It was pretty, although the grass could have done with a bit of a cut!
Quick internet and then back to the hostel for supper. We even had time for apple pie, but the custard, which I was really looking forward to, was horrible. I think it was just flour and milk with a bit of yellow in it. Nevermind, maybe it's just an English thing. Something else to look forward to when I get home!
